Characters:
1. Number One -- ... is anyone surprised? I know a lot of what I feel about her is mostly in my head but, again, in my damn head, she's what women in Trek should be like. I mean, not like her exactly, but competent and awesome and fond of blowing things up and possibly even flawed and not even remotely an accessory or "bridge candy," despite the fact that she's obviously pretty. The 'fond of blowing things up' part is negotiable, I guess.
2. Nyota Uhura -- And she would be the second you'd expect, huh? I am so very happy that she has taken on new life in the reboot, and I'm so happy that she does awesome things on screen rather than, I don't know, fan-dancing or having phenomenal abs (although I bet she can and I bet she does) and I am very so much hoping for awesome things to come in her future.
3. Neal Caffrey -- I'm not going to lie: I started watching the show because the cast is so outrageously beautiful. But despite that, I'm still intrigued by Neal's ability to fit in everywhere and yet nowhere. (Also, he looks great in HD.)
4. Nita Callahan -- Once upon a time I wanted to be a wizard. Okay, I still do--the Speech sounds like an awesome way to control magic. The world is a little bit crapsack-y (entropy much?), but hey. And I liked Nita because she hid out in libraries.
5. Nikki Heat -- This is totally cheating. The Nikki Heat books are terrible. I want very much to rewrite them. But the episode of Castle entitled "Nikki Heat" is really fucking hilarious. And obviously without Nikki Heat, there would be no premise for the show, so I owe herfor allowing me to stare at Nathan Fillion weekly for that, at least.
Music:
1. "Tonight," West Side Story -- BERNSTEIN. SONDHEIM. Possibly the best musical ever written. (I prefer "A Little Night Music" as a whole, but I have to admit that "West Side Story" is more likely to be on the capsule of music that will stand the test of all times.)
2. "Things We Said Today," the Beatles -- This was actually my favorite song on "Hard Day's Night" (the album; it's not in the movie), because it's minor, harmonically interesting, and hints at a much larger story. Probably not the most popular song of the group (/understatement), but nonetheless.
3. Le Tombeau de Couperin, Maurice Ravel -- the piano version. I love Ravel. If I'd gotten 'P,' I would have used the Pavane pour une enfante defunte; 'G,' Gaspard de la nuit. Ravel is -- I identify with his music in ways I can barely explain, and ways I don't think I can put into words that will suffice here.
4. "Telephone," Lady Gaga feat. Beyonce -- uh. It's on my running mix. I pretty much know this song so very much by heart because of it. It's not my favorite Lady Gaga tune (that position is currently held by "Poker Face" for reason I will not bore y'all with) but it's catchy as hell.
5. "That Girl," Stevie Wonder -- So the chords. "That's why I want to tell her that I love her (ooh), that I want her (ooh), that my mind and soul and body need her (ooh ooh ooh)" -- the chords going on under that? THOSE ARE ALL THAT IS GOOD ABOUT POP MUSIC.
